Testimonies of origins
A harsh land that requires dedication and effort, but which pays off with wonderful fruits. The ancient origins of prehistoric times are due to the testimony of artifacts found in the countryside.
Abbey of San Giorgio
Built in Norman times, the ruin of the abbey is about 4 km southwest of the town. It was founded by Duke Roger during the pontificate of Innocent II (1130-1142), who was only recognized as the legitimate pope in Sicily in 1139, hence the abbey was built between 1140 and 1142. Today, the ruins of the abbey are interesting experts for study, archaeological research, and restoration: a few decorative elements and the perimeter walls of the church; a basilica plan and three naves, three apses on the eastern end side, with the central one projecting to the outside, with a pilaster decoration similar to that of the cathedral of Cefalù.
Virtual Archaeological Museum
The Museum of Virtual Archaeology (M.A.V.) is a journey between reality and imagination to relive 5,000 years of the archaeological history of the Madonie and visiting archaeological sites that are today inaccessible due to geomorphological conditions virtually visitable.
The museum also allows children to learn archaeology playing.
Balza Areddula archaeological site
This is a site of historical-archaeological and naturalistic interest. A rocky ridge that reaches 1007 meters, once inhabited by the Sicans, is a hiding place for many natural rock species. Nestled between Balza Areddula and Balza Solletta is Strittu, a gorge where the Salso river narrows, Balza Areddula creates a beautiful landscape full of small natural pools and sulfur springs. Between history and legend, the Alimenese attribute therapeutic properties to Strittu water against dermatosis!
