Madonie hinterland
An itinerary, not only religious, to discover incredible places. Sanctuaries, abbeys, museums, rich in history and traditions. Keepers of works of inestimable historical-artistic value.
Basilica of Sant'Agata
On the route of the Churches, visitors can see Basilica of St Agatha, erected on the ruins of an earlier small church from around 1600. Famous for the painting of the Holy Family from the 18th century, the Madonna and Child, St Gaetano da Thiene and the Annunciation (both from the 18th century), and the painting of the Madonna of the Angels (16th century).
Abbey of San Giorgio
Built in Norman times, the ruin of the abbey is about 4 km southwest of the town. It was founded by Duke Roger during the pontificate of Innocent II (1130-1142), who was only recognized as the legitimate pope in Sicily in 1139, hence the abbey was built between 1140 and 1142. Today, the ruins of the abbey are interesting experts for study, archaeological research, and restoration: a few decorative elements and the perimeter walls of the church; a basilica plan and three naves, three apses on the eastern end side, with the central one projecting to the outside, with a pilaster decoration similar to that of the cathedral of Cefalù.
Church of Maria Santissima Assunta
Here is the Basilica Chiesa Madre di Maria Santissima Assunta, with a 15th-century secondary portal in Gothic-Catalan style, the sacred works and the 'treasure': works of goldsmithing and silverware from the medieval, baroque and neoclassical periods including Arab candelabrum engravings in Kufic characters.
